우리나라 전공의들이 영국 전공의들의 전면적인 파업에 대해 지지하고 나섰다.

대한전공의협의회(회장 송명제)는 27일 성명서를 발표하고 “대한민국 2만의 수련의들은 영국 동료들의 숭고한 파업을 강력히 지지한다”고 밝혔다.

영국 언론에 따르면 영국 전공의들은 26일, 27일 양일간 오전 8시부터 오후 5시까지 전면 파업에 나선다. 이들은 8월 예고된 새로운 전공의 계약의 불공정성에 파업을 결정한 것으로 보인다. NHS(National Health Service)가 제안한 계약 내용에는 전공의 임금 평균 30% 삭감, 정상근무시간 인상 등의 내용이 포함됐다.

이에 대전협은 인력과 지원이 부족한 영국의료 현실 속에서 오직 환자들을 지켜야한다는 절박함으로 이번 파업을 시작했다는 것에 절대적으로 공감하며 찬성한다는 입장을 밝혀왔다.

대전협은 “최근 세계 여러 나라의 정책입안자들이 환자를 위한 의료제도가 아닌, 정치적인 입지확보를 위한 포퓰리즘적 의료제도의 도입을 서두르고 있으며 이러한 상황은 대한민국도 크게 다르지 않다”며 “영국정부는 국민을 위한 의료정책을 위해 정의로우며 정치경제적으로 순수하고 국민의 지지를 받고 있는 영국 전공의들의 목소리에 귀 기울여야 할 것”이라고 지적했다.

대전협은 “우리 한국 2만 명의 전공의들은 이번 파업을 좌시하지 않을 것이며 가능한 모든 방법을 통해 영국의 동료들과 함께 올바른 의료를 고민할 것”이라고 덧붙였다.

 

- Statement in support of the British junior doctors -

We, the 20,000 medical interns and residents of South Korea, fully support the strike of the British junior doctors.

We have heard the news of British junior doctors launching into full-scale strike starting on April 26th, and we completely empathize with their cause. They have begun this strike out of desperate attempt to protect the patients from the harms of failing British medical system that sorely lacks in personnel and resources necessary to sustain its structure.

Policymakers around the world has recently begun to incorporate medical policies that has purely been out of populism: policies made to secure their political establishment without considering their consequences. Unfortunately, South Korea is no exception, and the medical interns and residents of this country are acutely aware that the patients will ultimately suffer from such flawed policies.

The British parliament must listen to its junior doctors who are protesting for medical policies independent from political or economical interests- policies that will work solely for the benefits of the British people.

We have repeatedly stressed the following point.

Something of good quality never comes cheap- everything comes at a price. There is a price to quality healthcare as well, and no government should mandate the doctors to bear all the burden that comes with it. The people's health and well-being can be preserved only through the efforts of its governors.

The 20,000 medical interns and residents of South Korea will not look away from the struggles of the British junior doctors, and we are seeking for every possible way to stand by them and fight together for healthcare that is righteous and fair.

The British junior doctors on strike are not alone in pursuing justice in medical system. Their comrades across the world, who all care for their patients, are behind them.
